미얀마 시민들을 선정하며
제17회 박종철인권상은 무장 군사세력의 폭력에 맞서 인권과 평화, 민주주의를 지키는 미얀마 시민들과 함께 하고자 합니다.
미얀마 시민들은 수십년에 걸친 민주항쟁의 역사를 거스르는 군부 쿠데타에 저항하여 자신들이 삶의 주인임을 외쳤습니다. 무장한 군인들이 무차별적으로 총탄을 퍼부어도, 치안이라는 이름으로 무수한 사람들을 체포하고 고문하여도, 외부세계와의 통신을 가로막고 삶을 고립시켜 공포의 암흑상태로 몰아넣어도, 미얀마 시민들은 이에 굴하지 않고 전방위적인 항거에 나서고 있습니다. 그들은 길거리에서는 붉은 리본을 패용하고 시민불복종의 시위와 파업으로 맞서며, 일상에서는 군부세력이 연관된 상품의 불매운동을 벌이며 저녁마다 주방기구를 두드리며 저항의 의지를 밝히고 있습니다.
정의는 그들의 것입니다. 민주주의를 위하여, 인권과 평화를 위하여 세상이 무너질 때까지 항복하지 않겠다는 그들의 다짐은 이제 미얀마의 민주화를 넘어 세상을 향합니다. 그들의 피 속에 쓰여진 항쟁의 역사는 우리 시대에 피와 눈물로 지켜내어야 하는 소중한 가치들을 일깨웁니다. 민주주의는 부단한 실천을 요구합니다. 그러기에 미얀마의 현재는 우리의 과거이며, 우리의 현재는 미얀마 시민들의 외침으로 인해 인권과 평화와 민주주의의 가치에 대한 성찰과 각성으로 나아갑니다. 저들이 비록 나의 신체는 구속을 시켰지만, 나의 사상과 신념은 결코 구속시키지 못합니다.라던 박종철 열사의 외침은 그들이 치켜든 세 손가락을 통해 되살아나고 있는 것입니다.
이에 우리는 미얀마 시민들의 곁으로 다가가 그들이 영글어내는 소중한 가치들을 우리의 삶에 되새기려 합니다. 어둠은 빛을 이기지 못한다는 자명한 진리를 그들과 함께 이 세상 모두에 전하고자 합니다. 미얀마와 우리 모두의 인권과 평화와 민주주의를 위해 우리는 미얀마 시민들의 항쟁에 끝까지 연대하며 세상을 바꾸어 내는 힘이 되고자 노력할 것입니다.

The People of Myanmar have been nominated for the 17thParkJong-Cheol Prize
The 17th ParkJong-Cheol Prize for Human Rights is awarded to the people of Myanmar, who are now struggling against the violence of military regime only to protect their democracy and peace.
The people of Myanmar have resisted the military coup and violence, declaring that it be just them who are the masters of their lives. The military staged a coup and went against decades long democratic movements in Myanmar. Even the ruthless attacks from soldiers may not stop the resistance of the people. Nor brutal violations and tortures, nor the cut-off of communication and isolation from the outside world may stop them. Even though the military drives them into a corner, the people of Myanmar will not give up coming out into the street. No such darkest fear made by unjust regime may defeat their spirit to seek justice. The people on the street nowadays, who are wearing red ribbons, are organizing civil rights demonstrations and strikes to stand against the military. The people in everyday lives are making boycott not to buy products which are related to military regime, and share their strong will to fight by making noises using kitchenware evening by evening.
Justice belongs to them, to the people. Their pledge for democracy, human rights, and peace is now over Myanmar’s democracy heading toward the world. And they will never surrender until the world shatters. The history of resistance, which is written in their blood, makes aware of priceless ideals of our times that we need to protect by great endeavor. Democracy requests constant practice. Thus, the present of Myanmar is the past of our Korean people, our present goes to reflections about human rights, peace, and democracy. And it goes with the voices of people in Myanmar. Although they [the military regime] might have imprisoned my body, they may never restrain my thoughts nor my beliefs. said Park Jong-Cheol. And his voice is rising with three fingers raised by the people in Myanmar.
Now we try to be in solidarity with the people of Myanmar, so that we can bring the ideals, which they are now building, back to our life. We want to convey the simple truth to the world, that the darkness is always overcome by the light. For Myanmar and for our human rights, peace, and democracy, we will stand in solidarity with their resistance till the end. And we will make our utmost efforts to change the world with you, the PEOPLE OF MYANMAR.
